Broidy, the Times points out in its report, stepped down as deputy finance chairman for the Republican National Committee (RNC) after it came out that he had agreed to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model, Shera Bechard, who became pregnant during an affair.
Gates, a former business partner of Paul Manafort (Trump’s 2016 campaign manager), was the star witness for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) during Manafort’s federal trial in 2018 — and he has yet to be sentenced. Gates has admitted in court that “it’s possible” that he used money from the Trump inaugural for personal expenses.
The Times reports that Tom Barrack, who served as chairman of Trump’s inaugural committee, has since had extensive business dealings in the Middle East. According to the Times’ report, Barrack’s company Colony Capitol (former Colony Northstar) has “won more than $1 billion worth of investments from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates since Trump won the Republican nomination.”

Those who accuse Trump of anti-Semitism are hard-pressed to corroborate their claims. His relationships with Jews and Jewish institutions over the years have been positive, and his treatment of Israel exemplary.
Though liberals accuse Trump of prejudice, today’s epidemic of Jew-hatred began under Obama, who pandered to anti-Semitic progressives and validated the BDS movement. In contrast, claims of pervasive conservative bias have been exposed by surveys indicating far less Jew-hatred – and far greater support for Israel – among Republicans than Democrats. Consistent with these findings, Congressional voting patterns reflect solid support for Israel from House and Senate Republicans. Conversely, there is no dispute that anti-Israel movements, programs, and events (e.g., BDS, Israel Apartheid Week) are endorsed by Democrats, progressives, and Islamists, but spurned by conservatives and Republicans.
Multiple major news outlets are reporting tonight that the FBI and federal prosecutors at the SDNY arrested Jeffrey Epstein tonight on charges of sex trafficking of minors. This is sending major shockwaves for a few reasons – not the least of which is that he’s an old friend of Donald Trump. There are clues that this whole thing may be heading in Trump’s direction.
Former prosecutor Alexander Acosta previously gave Jeffrey Epstein a ridiculously lenient plea deal to avoid child molestation charges. Donald Trump then appointed Acosta to be his Secretary of Labor, causing observers to ask if Trump did this as a reward for protecting his friend Epstein. In any case the SDNY has managed to work around this bad plea deal by hitting Epstein with new charges, as he was allegedly trafficking the underage women across state lines – hence tonight’s sex trafficking charges. One detail jumps off the page.
The Daily Beast says that the new Epstein case is being handled by the Public Corruption Unit of the SDNY. To be clear, that only happens when a public official is somehow involved in the case. Former FBI Assistant Director Frank Figliuzzi tweeted that we should all “Watch for the current Secretary of Labor; Watch for why this is being handled by the Public Corruption section at SDNY.”
This of course leads to a number of scenarios. If Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta is indeed the public official involved in this new case against Jeffrey Epstein, it wouldn’t simply be because Acosta gave out an absurd plea deal; that in and of itself would not be a criminal act. Acosta would only be a target if he allegedly did something specifically corrupt in exchange for giving the plea deal. That said, we don’t know for sure that it’s Acosta; that answer should come on Monday, when the case is presented in court.
It’ll be bad enough for Donald Trump if his Secretary of Labor is a target in a criminal case involving an alleged sex trafficker. It’ll be far worse for Trump if it turns out he was involved in Acosta’s decision to let Jeffrey Epstein off the hook. There are also longtime unconfirmed rumors across social media that Trump was involved in Epstein’s alleged sex crimes; we don’t need to tell you how bad that would be for Trump. In any case, look for everyone involved to scramble and panic between now and Monday.

The continuing case of Mr. Low and 1MDB is complex, with federal prosecutors unsealing an indictment against him and an associate in November, and extracting a guilty plea from a former Goldman Sachs banker who was involved in bribes and kickbacks related to 1MDB bond work. Mr. Broidy’s involvement, which predates Mr. Low’s indictment, underscores both Mr. Low’s efforts to navigate the United States judicial system, and the far-flung nature of Mr. Broidy’s business pursuits in the early days of the Trump administration.
In March 2017, Mr. Low’s associates were looking to retain “someone with political influence,” according to a Friday filing. Their goal was to help him deflect efforts by American authorities to seize assets bought with money he was accused of siphoning from 1MDB, and to end the Justice Department investigation into his activities, according to the filings. They indicate that, after Mr. Low expressed interest in hiring Mr. Broidy and Ms. Rosenzweig’s law firm, Mr. Michel met with Mr. Broidy and an associate “and explained Jho Low’s situation in the 1MDB matters.”
Mr. Broidy “indicated to Michel that although he was willing to assist Jho Low, he would not take any compensation directly from Jho Low in exchange for his services,” according to the filings. They indicate that Mr. Broidy “wanted $15 million in compensation, but Michel negotiated the price down to approximately $8 million.”
At least $6 million was transferred to Ms. Rosenzweig’s law firm through various accounts set up to “disguise the true source, origin and purpose of the funds, and, specifically, to conceal from U.S. financial institutions Jho Low’s ownership, control and affiliation with these funds and transactions,” according to the filings.
A draft agreement called for a $75 million “success fee” to be paid to Mr. Broidy if the investigation was resolved within 180 days, or $50 million if it was resolved within 365 days.
Mr. Broidy traveled to Thailand in May 2017 to meet with Mr. Low and Mr. Michel, and he indicated “that he would sit down with Jho Low’s legal team and figure out the best way to get to a settlement on the 1MDB matters,” according to the filings.
Mr. Michel indicated that Mr. Broidy “agreed to try to influence a potential nominee for a federal position that would have authority over the 1MDB forfeiture matters,” according to the filings, which note that the potential office holder was not nominated.

Elliott Broidy, a top G.O.P. fundraiser and ally of Donald Trump, was the subject of a federal raid last summer as part of an investigation into whether he had sought to sell influence with the White House to foreign officials. The raid, which was reported by ProPublica on Monday, targeted the former Republican National Committee deputy finance chair’s Los Angeles office and phones, and focused in part on his alleged efforts to get Trump’s Department of Justice to cease investigations into Malaysian financier Jho Low. Among the communications sought were Broidy’s contacts with members of Trump’s orbit, including Rick Gates, former deputy to Paul Manafort.
The newly revealed raid echoes that of ex-Trump fixer Michael Cohen, who eventually pleaded guilty to several crimes, including campaign-finance violations he says he committed at the direction of his former boss. Like Cohen, Broidy is a former ally of the president and an RNC fundraiser, but resigned from his post last April after it was revealed that he had paid off a Playboy model to cover up an alleged affair that resulted in her pregnancy. (Cohen arranged Broidy’s $1.6 million hush-money agreement.) In August, The Washington Post reported that Broidy was under D.O.J. investigation for allegations he was attempting to trade influence at the White House with foreign officials. Broidy’s lawyer denied wrongdoing at the time, saying his client had “never agreed to work for, been retained by nor been compensated by any foreign government for any interaction with the United States Government.”
While Broidy does not appear to have been charged with any crimes, Monday’s ProPublica report reveals that the government “took a more aggressive approach with the Trump ally than was previously known,” seizing records from his office and using his fingerprints and face to unlock his electronic devices. Broidy has already been heavily scrutinized for his work with Middle East fixer George Nader,an adviser to the United Arab Emirates, to lobby the administration on behalf of the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia. According to their communications, Nader praised Broidy for “how well [he handled] Chairman,” an apparent reference to Trump; he is now a cooperating witness for Robert Mueller. While it’s unclear how the raid could impact Trump himself, the fact that yet another person in his orbit has been wrapped up in a federal investigation certainly does him no favors.

Jeffrey E. Epstein, a billionaire New York financier long accused of molesting dozens of girls, was arrested on Saturday and charged with sex trafficking by federal prosecutors, an extraordinary turn of events in a long and sordid criminal case.
Two people with knowledge of the charges said on Saturday night that Mr. Epstein had been arrested in the New York area and was in federal custody.
He is expected to appear before a federal magistrate on Monday, more than a decade after he first gained notoriety with lurid accusations that he had paid dozens of girls for sexual massages in Florida.
Mr. Epstein, 66, had avoided federal criminal charges in 2007 and 2008 in a widely criticized plea dealwhose lenient terms continue to roil the Justice Department and are facing new scrutiny in the #MeToo era.
Before the plea deal, Mr. Epstein, a former hedge-fund manager, had been friendly with Donald J. Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
He pleaded guilty to lesser state charges of soliciting prostitution, served 13 months in a county lockup and registered as a sex offender. His jail arrangement allowed him to get out of the Palm Beach County Stockade six days a week to work out of his office.
The United States attorney’s office in Manhattan, which brought the charges against Mr. Epstein, declined to comment on Saturday night.
CBS Miami reported that Mr. Epstein was arrested late Saturday afternoon at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey after his private jet landed there from Paris. He was taken into custody by federal agents.
The television station said Mr. Epstein was arrested under a sealed federal indictment and charged with one count of sex trafficking and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
Defense lawyers for Mr. Epstein could not immediately be reached for comment.
Women who said they were Mr. Epstein’s victims have repeatedly assailed federal prosecutors for agreeing to a nonprosecution deal with him more than a decade ago.
Jack Scarola, a lawyer for two of the women, said he had not been informed of the arrest.
“But given his extensive pattern of past criminal conduct and the apparent addictive nature of his aberrant behavior, an arrest comes as no surprise,” Mr. Scarola said on Saturday night.
The new charges against Mr. Epstein were first reported on Saturday night by The Daily Beast.
In the Florida investigation, the authorities found that Mr. Epstein paid cash to dozens of girls, some of them as young as 14 or 15, to give him nude massages that often ended in masturbation, oral sex or, in at least one case, rape.
Some of the girls were runaways or foster children; Mr. Epstein would ask some girls to recruit others to bring to his properties. The encounters took place from 1999 to 2005.
According to court records, in a 2007 interview with the F.B.I., one girl shared that at age 15 she began visiting Mr. Epstein and gave him massages — both in her underwear and then nude — for $200 each.
Over time, the encounters became increasingly sexual. Mr. Epstein also got the girl to bring other girls who worked with her at a local strip club.
The plea deal that protected Mr. Epstein from federal charges was signed by the top federal prosecutor in Miami at the time, Alexander Acosta, who is now President Trump’s labor secretary.
In February, a judge in Florida ruled that the prosecutors led by Mr. Acosta violated federal law when they failed to disclose Mr. Epstein’s nonprosecution agreement to his victims.
The agreement was negotiated in secret while victims were told prosecutors were still pursuing a possible federal criminal case.
Mr. Acosta has defended the handling of Mr. Epstein’s case, saying the plea deal sent Mr. Epstein to jail and guaranteed that he would register as a sex offender.
But lawyers for his victims have fought for years against a punishment they saw as too lenient.
The case received new public scrutiny after an investigative report published by The Miami Herald in November quoted four of Mr. Epstein’s victims, who are now adults, on the record for the first time.
One of the victims, Courtney Wild, now 31, was wearing braces when she first met Mr. Epstein. “Jeffrey preyed on girls who were in a bad way, girls who were basically homeless,” Ms. Wild told The Herald. “He went after girls who he thought no one would listen to and he was right.”
Investigators had identified more than 30 victims. The Herald said it located about 60.
In February, the Justice Department said it had opened an investigation into the nonprosecution agreement. The inquiry is reviewing whether prosecutors committed professional misconduct in their handling of the Epstein case.

US billionaire and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested on new sex trafficking charges connected to allegations from the early 2000s, reports say.
Epstein was arrested in New York and will appear in court on Monday, law enforcement officials told US media.
It comes amid renewed controversy over a plea deal he once reached to end a federal investigation against him.
His lawyer has not yet commented on the latest charges.
Law enforcement officers have not been authorised to discuss the case, but several have spoken to US media outlets on condition of anonymity.
One told The Associated Press news agency that the latest charges stemmed from allegations that Epstein paid underage girls for massages and molested them at his New York and Florida homes.
The same claims were made by sources quoted in other outlets, including The Daily Beast, which first reported Epstein’s arrest.
Epstein, 66, was previously accused of sexually abusing dozens of teenage girls.
The wealthy financier – who was once friendly with Prince Andrew, former US President Bill Clinton and President Donald Trump – reached a plea deal to avoid federal sex trafficking charges in the case.
Instead, he pleaded guilty in 2008 to lesser state charges of soliciting and procuring a person under age 18 for prostitution
This averted a possible life sentence, and instead saw him spend 13 months in jail and register as a sex offender.
Earlier this year, a Florida judge ruled that federal prosecutors broke the law by not informing Epstein’s victims of the plea deal at the time.
Judge Kenneth Marra is currently deciding whether the non-prosecution agreement that protected Epstein from the more serious charges should still stand.
Following the ruling, the White House said it was also “looking into” Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta’s role in the plea deal, which he approved in his previous role as a US attorney.
Epstein in December deprived his alleged victims of the chance to testify against him for the first time by reaching a last-minute agreement to settle a civil lawsuit in December.

The inauguration of President Donald Trump was the most expensive in U.S. history, costing $107 million. All that money had to come from somewhere, and an in-depth report by a team of New York Times reporters is taking a close look at the money behind Trump’s inauguration.
Trump’s inauguration, the Times notes in its report, cost “more than double the previous record set by Barack Obama.” The Times discusses some of the key figures in the inauguration, from Elliott Broidy to Rick Gates to Tom Barrack — noting some of the events in their lives since the inauguration.
Broidy, the Times points out in its report, stepped down as deputy finance chairman for the Republican National Committee (RNC) after it came out that he had agreed to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model, Shera Bechard, who became pregnant during an affair.
Gates, a former business partner of Paul Manafort (Trump’s 2016 campaign manager), was the star witness for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) during Manafort’s federal trial in 2018 — and he has yet to be sentenced. Gates has admitted in court that “it’s possible” that he used money from the Trump inaugural for personal expenses.
The Times reports that Tom Barrack, who served as chairman of Trump’s inaugural committee, has since had extensive business dealings in the Middle East. According to the Times’ report, Barrack’s company Colony Capitol (former Colony Northstar) has “won more than $1 billion worth of investments from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates since Trump won the Republican nomination.”
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been investigating the Trump inaugural committee’s finances, and one of the people who has been cooperating in that investigation is Stephanie Winston Wolkoff — who was an adviser for First Lady Melania Trump until 2018. And Pavel Fuks, a Ukrainian/Russian developer, filed a lawsuit in June alleging that he paid $200,000 for VIP tickets to Trump’s inauguration but didn’t get what he paid for.
The Times’ report also mentions the ways in which that $107 million was spent — for example, “$10,000 for cosmetics for 20 aides” and “thousands of dollars worth of party decorations.”

Jeffrey Edward Epstein (born January 20, 1953) is an American financier, science and research philanthropist, and registered sex offender.[1] Epstein began his career at the investment bank Bear Stearns, before forming his own firm, J. Epstein & Co. He lives in the United States Virgin Islands.
In 2008, Epstein was convicted of soliciting an underage girl for prostitution, for which he served 13 months in “custody with work release”.[2] On July 6, 2019, Epstein was arrested for sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York.[3][4]

A recent survey by the Jewish Electorate Institute indicates that 71% of registered Jewish voters disapprove of the way President Trump handles anti-Semitism and 73% feel less secure since he took office. Clearly, many associate him with bigotry in spite of his staunch support for Israel, warm relationships with Jewish colleagues and family members, and policy of challenging Jew-hatred at the United Nations and around the globe.
Though Jewish Democrats can disagree with Mr. Trump’s politics, personality, or confrontational style, he has no known connections to anti-Semitic or anti-Israel organizations, churches or ideologues – unlike Barack Obama, whom they pronounced “good for the Jews” despite a questionable background that would have disqualified any Republican in their eyes. Curiously, they expressed little concern when thousands of anti-Semitic acts and hate-crimes were committed, and violent assaults against Jews nearly doubled, during Mr. Obama’s presidency.
The fears voiced by Jewish Democrats regarding Mr. Trump’s supposed bigotry seem disingenuous considering their party’s tolerance for anti-Israel advocacy and progressive anti-Semites. And in advocating a partisan agenda that impugns Israel’s national integrity and rationalizes ancient stereotypes as political expression, they betray heritage, tradition, and common sense. Many define themselves through identity politics, but the identity they assert is not really Jewish. Instead, they espouse a grievance-based platform that glorifies radicalism, devalues Jewish history, and fosters hatred against their people and ancient homeland.
Democratic Party membership today includes BDS activists and classical conspiracy theorists who are not shy about pushing their anti-Israel agenda, and yet liberal Jews continue sitting in the same tent. They were ambivalent during the 2016 election cycle as party radicals burned Israeli flags, and they remain so today when Congressional Democrats spew hateful or ignorant rhetoric.
True, some expressed outrage when Ilhan Omar asserted classical stereotypes against Jewish organizations, Rashida Tlaib questioned the allegiance of pro-Israel legislators and claimed Palestinians gave “safe haven” to Holocaust survivors, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asserted the Israeli “occupation” myth and praised anti-Semitic British politician Jeremy Corbyn. But their umbrage was short-lived, and there was no outcry when Democrats stripped a House resolution of language solely and specifically condemning anti-Semitism. Party leaders have only compounded the problem by labeling as racist, Islamophobic, or misogynistic those who criticize House Reps. Tlaib, Omar, Ocasio-Cortez and others for such egregious comments.
Those who accuse Trump of anti-Semitism are hard-pressed to corroborate their claims. His relationships with Jews and Jewish institutions over the years have been positive, and his treatment of Israel exemplary.
Though liberals accuse Trump of prejudice, today’s epidemic of Jew-hatred began under Obama, who pandered to anti-Semitic progressives and validated the BDS movement. In contrast, claims of pervasive conservative bias have been exposed by surveys indicating far less Jew-hatred – and far greater support for Israel – among Republicans than Democrats. Consistent with these findings, Congressional voting patterns reflect solid support for Israel from House and Senate Republicans. Conversely, there is no dispute that anti-Israel movements, programs, and events (e.g., BDS, Israel Apartheid Week) are endorsed by Democrats, progressives, and Islamists, but spurned by conservatives and Republicans.Those who accuse Trump of anti-Semitism are hard-pressed to corroborate their claims. His relationships with Jews and Jewish institutions over the years have been positive, and his treatment of Israel exemplary. In contrast, Barack Obama had a troubling record that Jewish Democrats simply ignored. He sat in the pews of Jeremiah Wright’s church for twenty-two years, reportedly hobnobbed with members of Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam in Chicago, counted among friends and colleagues people like Rashid Khalidi and Edward Said, and treated Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu disrespectfully throughout his presidency.
The tendency of liberals to ignore Democratic anti-Semitism suggests they are not serious about confronting it. If they were, they would make a priority of denouncing bigotry on the left as conservatives have done on the right since the 1990s. Their obsession with phantom Republican prejudice stems from their flawed understanding of Jewishness as progressive metaphor and endorsement of ideologies that contravene traditional Judaism as authentically Jewish. The resulting absurdity is exemplified by their reluctance to condemn Democratic bigots the way British Jews have denounced Corbyn and the Labour Party. They prefer to blame Republicans for anti-Semitism – much of which comes from the left – over putting their own house in order.
Jewish progressives cannot tolerate Trump’s relationship with Netanyahu, whom they despise, but this disdain reflects the projection of their political values onto an Israeli society that has far different priorities. Likewise, though the Reform and Conservative movements elevate “social justice” over traditional observance, most Israelis question their relevance. And whereas Americans believe that excoriating Trump and adulating Obama are Jewish mandates, Israelis tend to disagree. In fact, many appreciate Trump’s admiration for Israel and stance against global anti-Semitism, but wonder how US Jews could have supported Obama despite his relationships with Israel haters, apologetic views on radical Islam, and apparent disdain for the Jewish State. More fundamentally, many are baffled that American Jews would trade ancestral loyalty for political causes that are extraneous to or inconsistent with traditional Judaism (e.g., transgender activism, Palestinian advocacy).
As observed by the late Prof. Daniel J. Elazar more than twenty years ago, most non-Orthodox Israelis, whether identifying as traditional or secular, incorporate observance into their lives to varying degrees. And while some might not oppose official recognition of liberal Judaism, “except for a minuscule handful, they do not seek it for themselves nor do they respond to it positively,” he wrote then, noting further: “It is not just that the religiously Orthodox Jews in Israel have not found satisfaction in those two diaspora-originated movements [i.e., Reform and Conservative], but, perhaps especially, neither have the religiously moderate traditional or secularist Jews.” (“Why Reform and Conservative Judaism have Not Worked in Israel,” www.jcpa.org/dje/articles2/whyreform.htm.) Though not all Israelis are stringently observant, most seem to accept the validity of Jewish tradition.
These observations are no less relevant today, as American liberals and their movements have distinguished themselves by (a) seeking to impose sociopolitical standards on Israel that most Israelis find irrelevant and (b) promoting causes that many believe threaten their country’s sovereignty and Jewish character. Nothing illustrates this more than the liberal American propensity for dialoguing with Islamist front groups posing as moderate, supporting organizations like J Street, and legitimizing Palestinian national claims that negate Jewish history – all while demanding that Israel kneel before the altar of progressivism.
Not surprisingly, many Israelis reject liberal Judaism for its ethical relativism as much as its lenient ritual orientation.
Unlike their Israeli counterparts, US Jews seem to suffer from identity erosion influenced by declining observance, substandard Jewish education, and the sacralization of liberal politics. Though many claim their Jewishness requires them to reject Trump, they conflate identity with secular ideals that defy Jewish tradition. Liberals can dislike Trump for any reason or none at all, but they cannot claim their disdain is Judaically-mandated. Nor can they ignore how Trump has reversed his predecessor’s course of demeaning Israel, enabling Islamic radicalism, empowering Iran, and whitewashing leftist anti-Semitism.
Jewish history is replete with examples of those who rejected heritage and community. During the Hellenistic period, many emulated Greek culture and repudiated their ancestors, while during medieval times some accepted baptism and sought to lead others astray. The apostate Nicholas Donin in 1240 denounced the Talmud to Pope Gregory IX, inflamed Dominican ire, and instigated public disputations and Talmud burnings. Similarly, Johannes Pfefferkorn in 1509 advocated expelling Jews from German lands, kidnapping and baptizing their children, and burning Hebrew texts. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, many joined European radical movements, abandoned Judaism, and discouraged education and observance.
Whereas yesterday’s apostates renounced religion and culture, today’s progressives claim fealty to tradition while falsely equating Jewish identity with non-Jewish priorities. They misuse terms like “tikkun olam” and “Mussar” to imply Judaic authenticity, though doing so only illustrates their distance from tradition. True tikkun olam involves the promotion of societal harmony through Halakhic observance, while authentic Mussar calls for ethical character development through Torah study, mitzvah observance, and personal introspection. Neither promotes ideals that are alien to Judaism.
Many American Jews today know little of their heritage and attempt to fill the gaps with agendas that bear no resemblance to the Judaism of their ancestors. Though Jewish voters can certainly support any policies their consciences may dictate, tradition does not require them to be liberal Democrats – or conservative Republicans.
As for President Trump, they can support or oppose him for any reason. But they cannot claim that hatred for the man reflects Jewish virtue – and certainly not in light of his support for Israel and condemnation of global anti-Semitism. Nor can they oppose him based on dubious claims of prejudice, especially when they ignore or excuse flagrant anti-Semitism within the Democratic Party. Whatever moral authority they claim to possess is only diluted when they condemn Jew-hatred where it doesn’t exist but grant a pass where it does.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Billionaire coal entrepreneur Chris Cline, who worked his way out of West Virginia’s underground mines to amass a fortune and become a major Republican donor, was killed in a helicopter crash along with six other Americans, his lawyer’s office confirmed on Friday.
Cline and his 22-year-old daughter Kameron were on board the aircraft when it went down Thursday, said Joe Carey, a spokesman for attorney Brian Glasser, who planned to issue a family statement later Friday.
Leaders of industry, government and academics in West Virginia eulogized Cline as a coal industry visionary and a generous giver.
“He was a very farsighted entrepreneur,” said Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association. “Chris was just one of those folks who had the Midas touch.”
Forbes estimated his fortune at $1.8 billion this year. Cline donated heavily to President Donald Trump and other Republicans. Federal records show he gave the president’s inaugural committee $1 million in 2017 and spread thousands more to conservative groups as well as committees representing prominent Republicans such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.
Bahamas Police Supt. Shanta Knowles told The Associated Press that they began searching when police received a report from Florida that Cline’s helicopter failed to arrive in Fort Lauderdale as expected on Thursday.
The bodies of the four women and three men were recovered and taken to the capital in Nassau to be officially identified, Knowles said. The helicopter was still in the water, and based on preliminary information, she did not believe there had been a distress call before it went down.
A Royal Bahamas Police Force statement said authorities and local residents found the crash site two miles off Big Grand Cay, group of private islands Cline owned.

Aviation safety investigators in the Bahamas are working to determine the cause, said Jaime Nixon, an aviation safety analyst for the Air Accident Investigation Department of the Bahamas. The Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority told the Federal Aviation Administration that the Augusta AW139 helicopter was located in the water at about 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Cline started in the coal industry at 22 years old, working in an underground mine in southern West Virginia, as his father and grandfather did, according to a biography on one of his companies’ websites.
He quickly moved into management roles and soon formed his own energy development company, the Cline Group, which grew into one of the country’s top coal producers.
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice tweeted that he “lost a very close friend” in Cline, “a WV superstar.”
“Chris Cline built an empire and on every occasion was always there to give. What a wonderful, loving, and giving man,” Justice tweeted.
Cline also donated $5 million to support West Virginia’s Marshall University Sports Medicine Institute and another $3.5 million for the school’s athletics foundation.
“Our hearts are heavy,” said Marshall University President Jerome A. Gilbert. “Chris’s generosity to our research and athletics programs has made a mark on Marshall University and our students for many years to come.”

The death of the 60-year-old magnate led to eulogies from industry leaders, government officials and academics, who described Cline as a visionary generous with his $1.8bn fortune.
Bill Raney, president of the West Virginia Coal Association, said Cline began working in the mines of southern West Virginia at a young age, rising through the ranks of his father’s company. He formed his own energy development business, the Cline Group, which grew into one of the country’s top coal producers.
When he thought mining in the Appalachian region was drying up, he bought reserves in the Illinois Basin in a smart investment in high sulfur coal, according to the website of Missouri-based Foresight Energy, a company he formed.
Cline sold most of his interest in Foresight for $1.4bn and then put $150m into a metallurgical coal mine in Nova Scotia, according to a 2017 Forbes article titled Chris Cline Could Be The Last Coal Tycoon Standing.
The piece captured his opulence: a mansion in West Virginia with a manmade lake big enough to waterski on and a white stallion stud name Fabio. A gun collection so deep federal officials would take stock once a month. A 200ft yacht called Mine Games.
In the piece, Cline defended coal and waved off some scientific evidence for climate change.
“People deserve the cheapest energy they can get,” he said. “Tell the poor in India and China that they don’t deserve to have reliable, affordable electricity.”
To that effect, he also spoke about solar panels, wind turbines and Tesla batteries on Big Grand Cay, saying: “Where it makes sense, I’m absolutely for it.”
He gave Trump’s inaugural committee $1m and shared thousands more with conservative groups and Republican figures such as Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and the Florida senator Marco Rubio, according to federal records.
Cline gave at least $8.5m to Marshall University in West Virginia.

Authorities began searching for the helicopter after police received a report from Florida that it failed to arrive in Fort Lauderdale as expected on Thursday, Bahamas police superintendent Shanta Knowles said.

The property became known as an escape for the disgraced president in the 1970s.
