Eight Democratic Senators; Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Angus King (D-ME), Jackie Rosen (D-NV), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), joined Republicans tonight in a breakthrough vote, 60-40, to begin debate Monday on a House-passed funding bill so that the measure can be amended to combine three bipartisan, full-year spending bills with a Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the rest of the government through January 30th, a major step in ending the now forty-day shutdown of the U.S. Government.
The deal decided tonight between the small group of Democrats and Republicans, offers very few concessions beyond what had already been offered by Republicans in October, with Republican lawmakers said to have only agreed to hold a future vote regarding expiring healthcare subsidies provided under Obamacare. Tonight’s vote has drawn significant anger and condemnation from a vast majority of Democrat supporters and lawmakers, including both Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who disapproved of the vote, accusing the group of eight who joined Republican Senators of “betrayal,” claiming that they agreed to a deal which provides no assurances that healthcare will continue under the Affordable Care Act.
