Arctic Oscillation index, a measure of the difference in mid-latitude and high latitude sea level pressure, in recent years. A more general observation, made by both Rothrock et al. (1999) and Maslanik et al. (1996), is that observed ice cover has become thinner in some regions of the Arctic during the 1990s.
