Lawfare Archive: The Migrant Caravan and Its Dissenters

From October 27, 2018: There is a caravan—you’ve probably heard something about it. Stephanie Leutert, director of the Mexico Security Initiative at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law, has heard something about it. On Friday, Benjamin Wittes caught up with Leutert to talk about her time on the Mexico-Guatemala border traveling with migrants who are following a trail not unlike that of the caravan. They talked about why people are joining this caravan, what are alternatives to it, why certain migrants are shunning it, the factors pushing people out of countries like Honduras and Guatemala, and what it’s like to be a child on the long trek to the United States.

From Washington: How the Hunter Biden Trial Will Impact the 2024 Campaign

President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, spent much of the week in a Wilmington, Delaware court with his federal gun charges front and center. Hunter’s defense attorney devoted his time to trying to prove that his client was not a habitual drug user when he purchased a handgun back in 2018. Despite witnesses and text messages with evidence suggesting that Hunter was using crack, the defense team remains adamant that wasn’t the case. FOX News Washington-based correspondent David Spunt explains how the President’s son’s legal issues will impact the 2024 Presidential Election.

Tensions in Washington, D.C. are high as some of the highest-profile officials were in front of Congress panels this week. Former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci addressed a House Committee denying he attempted to cover up the possibility of a COVID-19 lab leak, while Attorney General Merrick Garland was voted to be held in contempt of Congress for how the DOJ has become “politicized and weaponized” under his leadership. FOX News Senior Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram weighs in on both hearings and analyzes the current political landscape on Capitol Hill.

Box turtles. Coral. These illegally trafficked animals still need a good home

Confiscated live animals are temporarily held in what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls their “live room” at an office building near Los Angeles International Airport, while authorities try to find them longer-term housing and specialized care.

When authorities find wildlife that are being illegally trafficked, at ports or airports, the animals are often in terrible shape. Sick, starved, distressed. A pilot project in Southern California aims to get seized wildlife immediate care.
